Grocery Shopping in Nyimba

People often ask me how life is different here and sometimes that question stumps me because I have become so used to the way life is here....meaning the daily routine of life in Zambia. Going to the market means finding what you need after looking in several different little shops, or making friends with a man who has to ride by your house on the way to the market to sell you his fresh vegetables. Some things that is very different about "grocery shopping" here that there are no lines, you cannot be afraid to ask anyone if they know where you can find a certain item, and you must be BOLD! That is one thing that I did have to get used to here, many times there is no line (or what they call a queue) and you have to push your way to the front and leave NO space between you and the person in front of you. Shopping is very fun because you have a good time meeting people and you never know what you will find! I enjoy the market and all of the people that I meet and things that I learn.
I met this man walking home from the market one day and he sells me fresh corn (which is hard to find because the Zambians dry their corn to make mealie meal, their staple food). He is a sweet man and I am thankful for him taking the time to make a visit to my house with corn! This is Defao Investments (investment means that someone has invested to have this store), not like ING or Roth IRAs! I visit this store often because he has the cheapest mealie meal and bottled Cokes in Nyimba! Here we are trading out our empty coke bottles for filled ones! Yes, they drink out of bottles here in Zambia! It is GREAT!!!
