Kendall bought me three painting this weekend when we were in Lusaka. There are many artists in Zambia, but this one, Patrick Banda, really caught my eye. His paintings are vivid in color and capture the village life of Zambians in the best way I have seen. Each of the paintings have little details that just really depict village life so well. These pictures of the paintings do not do them justice, they are bright and colorful! I love so many things about this culture and was happy to see an artist capture them in such a true light!
I call this one "An afternoon with Friends". Women popping popcorn over a braiser (like a small grill without the grate). The braiser is in the bottom right corner. I love the braiser in this one because we have cooked on one many times!!

I call this one "3 p.m." Women are walking back home from the well after fetching their water for the evening. The yellow jug in the woman's left hand and on top of the woman's is a used cooking oil container that is used for carrying water. I love this painting for the details of the buckets, the different body types of the two women and the children sitting by the road.
I call this one, "Preparing to Sell". In this painting the women are bagging charcoal to sell. In the far left corner you see some gray looking bags, those are bags of charcoal. The woman in the red skirt (chitenge) is putting charcoal into a large bag that will be filled above the top. To keep the charcoal in the bag, a net will be made out of tree bark in order to hold the charcoal in the bag as it is transported. I love the chitenges in this painting and the women working together.
