March 14th, I began to feel like I had a stomach bug. Several hours later, the chills, sweating, headache, and body aches began. I knew that I had malaria. I went ahead and took some medicine to begin treating the malaria.
March 15th, the day began okay, but in the late morning my symptoms magnified and I began to be sick more frequently. The thing that I couldn't ignore was the pain in my lower back and my legs. The pain in my back was more severe than anything else. We determined that I needed to go to the hospital at Minga Stop. I traveled there and by the time I reached there, I had a fever of 104 and the pain in my back was unbearable. I saw the doctor, an Irish young woman named Lena. She did a lab work up on me only to determine that I had malaria, UTI, and a kidney infection. I spent the night in the hospital on the 15th and the 16th.
During my stay in the hospital, I learned a lot and the Lord reminded me of how much He loved me, how blessed I was and it was a sweet time in the midst of a trial. As I laid in my bed watching people pass by, I just prayed that I could be a light in that place during the time that I was there. I made friends with these four women who came every morning and evening to greet me. They were there with their young sister who was very ill. God really reminded me of how much I depend upon Him and how much I take for granted as a westerner. I watched men, women, and children who were facing grave illnesses and they were without complaint and just faced each day with hope.
I kept thinking of Job and how humiliated he was in Job 30, and then in Job 33 how Elihu speaks to Job and says, "The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life." Job 33:4 I was so thankful for medicine, a good friend to stay with me in the hospital, and a doctor who really cared. I left the hospital in good spirits and looking forward to what God would teach me next.
March 26th, we traveled to Lusaka for me to receive some more medicine because an ultrasound in Petauke showed that I needed more medication and that my kidneys were still very inflammed. We traveled to Lusaka and on the 27th I began treatment via IV for the infection.
March 30th, I was released from treatment. My white blood cell count was down and my kidneys were functioning properly. Praise the Lord!
We are home and happy and praising the Lord for the great things that He has done! On our way home we saw a rainbow over the Luangwa River and the end of the rainbow was in the river. It was an awesome sight and another great reminder of my Savior's love for me.
You can barely see it, but it is coming from the top left corner of the pictures.

I was wondering what was going on. I'm so happy that God took care of you and even blessed you with a rainbow on the way home! Love you girl.
So glad you're OK! I'm sure that was scary for everyone, but I'm glad God took care of you - even with a rainbow! I love how He's into the details.
